Bespoke Suit Measuring Guide: 12 Details Senior Tailors Won't Tell You

Last year we made 60 bespoke suits for a law firm in Nanjing. During the first fitting, we found 8 of them had incorrect shoulder lines.

What was the problem? The tailor measured shoulder width with the client standing, but the lawyers stand in court 2-3 hours daily with arms extended forward — the shoulder line needs to be moved forward 1-1.5cm to ensure no tightness when raising arms.

This experience made me realize: bespoke suit measuring is not simply measuring dimensions, it's "reading the client's daily life". Two people of the same height and weight can have measuring differences of 5-8cm due to different work scenarios.

HUMTUN has been making bespoke suits for 18 years, serving 600+ companies in Suzhou and Nanjing. Today our senior tailors share 12 key measuring details.

12 Key Measuring Details

Detail 1: Shoulder Line — Not Just "Shoulder Width"

Shoulder line measures the shoulder seam position, not just shoulder width. The shoulder seam position is determined by two factors:
- Shoulder peak point (outermost point of shoulder bone)
- Shoulder slope angle (sloped/flat/raised shoulder)

For sloped shoulders, the seam should move forward 0.5-1cm; for raised shoulders, the seam should move back 0.5-1cm.

Detail 2: Chest — Ease Allowance is More Important Than Size

For chest, "tighter is not better". Business formal suit chest ease is 10-12cm (e.g., net chest 100cm, suit chest 110-112cm). Slim fit can be 8-10cm.

Too little ease makes raising arms difficult; too much ease looks bulky.

Detail 3: Waist — "Standing Waist" and "Sitting Waist"

Standing waist is the traditional method. But the real determinant of pants waist is sitting waist (waist loosens 2-3cm when sitting).

Nanjing law firm case: Client standing waist 82cm, sitting waist 85cm. Pants waist made at 82cm would be tight when sitting, at 85cm would be loose when standing — make at 83-84cm, add 1cm waist adjuster.

Detail 4: Hip — Determines Pants Comfort

Hip ease 8-10cm. But note the hip peak position (highest point of buttocks). High hip peak needs high-waist style, low hip peak needs mid-waist style.

Detail 5: Sleeve Length — 1cm Above Tiger's Mouth is Standard

Business formal sleeve length standard is 1-1.5cm above the tiger's mouth (base of thumb). But two exceptions:
- Frequent drivers: Sleeve can be 0.5cm longer (shirt doesn't show when arm extends)
- Frequent typists: Sleeve can be 0.5cm shorter (hand back not covered when arm drops)

Detail 6: Pants Length — "Front Length" and "Back Length"

Front length (crotch to ankle) and back length (waist to ankle) usually differ by 2-3cm. Back length should be 2-3cm longer to ensure no ankle exposure when standing.

Detail 7: Sleeve Width — Determines Arm-Raising Comfort

Sleeve width (sleeve root circumference) is more important than sleeve length. Too narrow the entire suit will be pulled up when raising arm; too wide looks listless.

Business formal sleeve width ease 8-10cm. Slim people can be 6-8cm.

Detail 8: Back Length — Determines Jacket Length

Back length is the distance from back collar to waistline. Back length determines the jacket hem position. People with longer back length need 1-2cm longer jacket, otherwise the waist will be exposed when sitting.

Detail 9: Collar — Determines Shirt Comfort

Shirt collar ease 2-3cm. But frequent tie wearers need 1cm more (tie takes up collar space).

Detail 10: Front Chest Width and Back Width — Determines Fit

The difference between front chest width and back width determines waist suppression degree. The greater the difference (back wider than front), the more waist suppression. The smaller the difference, the looser the fit.

Detail 11: Standing and Sitting Posture — Dual Posture Measurement

Senior tailors do dual posture measurement: measure once standing, once sitting. The difference reflects "client's work scenario".

Frequent office work: Standing-sitting difference is small

Frequent podium/court work: Standing-sitting difference is large

Detail 12: Use Scenario — Determines Detail Adjustment

The final critical step: ask the client about the scenario of wearing this suit.

Business meeting: Standard style

Court/podium: Shoulder forward + sleeve +0.5cm

Wedding: Slim fit + longer jacket

Daily commute: Casual style + stretch fabric

5 Common Consequences of Measuring Mistakes

| Mistake | Consequence | Repair Cost |

| Wrong shoulder line | Tight when raising arm, looks bulky | Disassemble and redo (50% cost) |
| Too little chest ease | Buttons won't close, looks thin | Disassemble and add ease (40% cost) |
| Wrong sleeve length | Shirt shows/hand back covered | Adjust sleeve (10% cost) |
| Pants too short | Ankle exposed | Extend pants leg (15% cost) |
| Hip too tight | Hip squeeze | Disassemble and add ease (40% cost) |
